HANNE CAROLINE POEPPELMEIER (1860-1925)

THE THIRD GENERATION-POEPPELMEIER

AND

THE SIXTH GENERATION-GLIED

PART ONE

The setting for this chapter originates in 1860 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe which is now located in the modern day state of Nordrhein/Westfalen, Germany, with the birth of Hanne CarolineG3 Pöppelmeier. In 1867, the setting for this chapter shifts to America with the immigration of the Pöppelmeier family to Missouri. Hanne Caroline, better known as Caroline, was the granddaughter of BernhardG1 Pöppelmeier, and the daughter of Hermann HeinrichG2 Pöppelmeier and his wife, Anne Catharine IlsabeinG5 Pöppelmeier nee Glied. She was also the great, great, great granddaughter of EberdtG1 Glied; the great, great granddaughter of JobstG2 Glied; the great granddaughter of Albert HenrichG3 Glied; and the granddaughter of Albert HenrichG4 Glied.

During the year 1860, the Pony Express made its' first run from St. Joseph, MO to California in eleven days. Later that same year, Lincoln was elected President of the United States and South Carolina seceded from the Union.1 By 1860, the economy of Germany had improved while the economy in America was in a slump. These are a few of the events that occurred in the year that Hanne Caroline Pöppelmeier was born.

1256.     HANNE CAROLINEG3 PÖPPELMEIER (BernhardG1 ) (GliedG6 : Eberdt,G1 Jobst,G2 Albert Henrich,G3 Albert HenrichG4 ), the seventh child of the Erbpächter, Hermann HeinrichG2 and Anne Catharine IlsabeinG5 Pöppelmeier nee Glied, was born on 2 Feb 1860 at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Lippe, Germany. She was baptized by Pastor Bosse on 4 Mar 1860 at the Evangelisch Münstergemeinde Church in Herford, Westfalen, Germany. Her sponsor was Joh. Glied of Bauerschaft Altstädt.2 The early years of her life were spent in this locale. She was about seven years old when the family came to America.3 From their home at Bauerschaft Ahmsen, Caroline, along with her parents and siblings, traveled to the port of Bremen where her father bought passage for the family on the Bark Dorette, a sailing vessel. The Bark Dorette arrived in New Orleans on 21 Oct 1867. When the family arrived in America, they found that the economy of Missouri was beginning to recover from the Civil War which had ended two years earlier. Soon after their arrival in Lyon Township, Franklin Co., MO, Caroline's parents became members of Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church.

On 17 Aug 1870, F. W. Pehle the enumerator for the U.S. Census visited the farm of Henry Poeppelmeier which was located in Lyon Township of Franklin Co., MO. Mr. Pehle found Caroline, age 10, living in her parents' household and noted on the census form that Caroline had attended school during the past year.4 Caroline received her religious instruction at Ebenezer "Stone" Evangelical and Reformed Church of Franklin Co., MO and was confirmed on 15 Mar 1874, Caetare Sunday, by Pastor Bek at this church. Her memory verse was Jer. 45:22.5

By 1880, Caroline was no longer living at home, but was working as a servant for John Boland, who owned a hotel in Washington Township, Franklin Co., MO.6

On 26 Nov 1882, Hanne Caroline Poeppelmeier wed JOHANN FRIEDRICH SCHUERMANN. They were married by Rev. Emil Lenk at Bethlehem Evangelical Church in St. Louis, MO. Ludwig Schuermann and Charlotte Poeppelmeier witnessed their marriage. Johann Friedrich was from St. Louis, MO and Caroline was from Franklin Co., MO.7

Johann Friedrich (1853-1924), the son of Friedrich Wilhelm and Wilhelmine Schürmann nee Brune, was born on 23 Oct 1853 at St. Louis, MO. He was baptized by Pastor E. O. Lenk on 5 Mar 1854 at Bethlehem Evangelical Church in St. Louis, MO. His sponsor was Johann Friedrich Detering.8 Johann Friedrich was known as John and Fred. He will be listed as John in the text of this story. John grew up in St. Louis locale, and was confirmed on 5 Apr 1868 at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO.9

After their marriage, John and Caroline made their home in St. Louis and attended Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. Lenk was the pastor of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church until 1883 when he left Bethlehem shortly after Easter. Rev. Carl Ludwig Janzow accepted the call from Bethlehem and was installed on 29 Oct 1883. Rev. Janzow served at Bethlehem until 1907 and during that time he baptized John and Caroline's children.10

When Christian Hermann, the enumerator for the Twelfth U.S. Census, stopped by 3926 North 23th St. (Block #1243) in the 19th Ward of the City of St. Louis, MO, he found John Schuermann, age 46; and his wife of 17 years, Caroline, age 40; and their children: August, age 16; Dorothea, age 12; and Ella, age 9. It was noted on this census that John owned his home free of mortgage and that John and his son, August, were employed as office clerks. John's daughters, Dorothea and Ella, had attended school for ten months during the past year.11

Ten years later, when the Thirteenth U.S. Census was taken on 19 Apr 1910 by Willard T. Alexander, John, age 56, and his family were living at 1131 New House AVE in Ward 2 of the City of St. Louis, MO. John was the head of a household that included his wife of 27 years, Caroline, age 50; and their unmarried children: H. H. August, age 26; Dorothea, age 22; and Ella, age 19. John and August were employed as clerks in a tobacco store.12

John and his family were living at 3958 Palm ST in St. Louis, MO when the Fourteenth U.S. Census was enumerated in Jan of 1920. John was the head of a household that included his wife, Caroline, age 59; and their daughters: Dorothy, age 31; and Ella, age 29. It was noted on this census that John was not employed at this time, but that Dorothy and Ella were employed at the shirt factory, where they were seamstresses.13

John Schuermann, age 71, died from cirrhosis of the liver on 17 Nov 1924 at his home at 3958 Palm ST in St. Louis, MO and was buried on 19 Nov 1924 in the new Bethlehem Cemetery, St. Louis Co., MO.14 Hanne Caroline Schuermann nee Poeppelmeier, age 65, died from a cardiac embolism on 6 Apr 1925 at her home at 3958A Palm ST in St. Louis, MO and was buried on 7 Apr 1925 in the new Bethlehem Cemetery, St. Louis Co., MO.15

Melba Schuermann writes, "I was too young to know my grandparents, therefore I have no interesting stories to tell except hearsay. My mother said that Caroline made very good potato salad and home made bread. She did beautiful needle work. I have a few pieces to show, including a Battenberg lace tablecloth. I noticed that John Schuermann's home address at the time of his death was 3958 Palm ST and Caroline's at the time of her death was 3958A Palm ST. I thought this was strange since it was the same house but came to the conclusion that while John was alive, they lived in the whole house (2 floors). She could have rented the downstairs or first floor and lived on the second floor. Dora was the only one still living there. The first floor had a large kitchen, bedroom, living room and entrance hall. There was an outside side entrance which led to a stairway to the second floor. A door separated the stairs from the first floor. The second floor also had a large kitchen, bedroom, living room and another bedroom above the entrance hall on the first floor. I do not remember being at this house before my grandparents died, but do remember going there when it was vacant and my father was trying to rent it. The door to the stairs was locked and the place was rented in two units. I do not know if the two kitchens were installed when the house was built or if that was done later. Of course, they did not put much in kitchens in those days, just a sink with running water. There were bathrooms on both floors."

John and Caroline Schuermann nee Poeppelmeier had the following five children:

1429.     i.     FRIEDRICH HEINRICH AUGUST SCHUERMANN (1883-1942).
1443.     ii.     ROSA WILHELMINE CHARLOTTE SCHUERMANN (1884-1885).

Melba Schuermann writes, "August worked for Ligget and Myers Tobacco Company for most of his working life but he never smoked. In 1940 our home was broken up due to illness of both August and Christine. Christine had to go to Wheat Ridge (Colorado) Sanitarium and August to Emmaus Home in Marathasville, MO where he died. Christine returned to Maplewood later in 1942. She lived first on Walter AVE and later on Hazel AVE where she lived until her death. Alice, Melba, and Marie went to live with their Uncle and Aunt, John and Myrtle Bormann."27 August's interests included church work, photography and travel.
