JOBST HENRICH GLIED (1723-1776)

THE SECOND GENERATION-GLIED

PART ONE

The story of our Glied ancestors continues in this chapter with our direct line ancestor, (#2) Jobst HenrichG2 Glied. Jobst was the first identified child of EberdtG1 Glied. He was born in 1723 which was the year that Louis XV came of age, the treaty of St. Petersburg ended the Russo-Persian War, and the treaty of Charlottenburg was signed between Prussia and Britain.1 The setting for this chapter takes place in the parishes of Jöllenbeck and Schildesche, in the modern day state of Nordrhein/Westfalen, Germany.

2.     JOBST HENRICHG2 GLIED, the first child of EberdtG1 and Anna Maria Ilsabein Glied nee Trebbe(n), was baptized on 24 Mar 1723 at the Evangelisch Church in Jöllenbeck, Westfalen, Germany. His only sponsor was Henrich Trebben.2 Jobst grew up in the Oberjöllenbeck parish. During his childhood, there was relative peace in the country which was still ruled by Frederick I.3 It is possible that he attended school as Frederick I had made school attendance compulsory in 1717.4 Jobst was eleven years old when Frederick II, better known as Frederick the Great, became King of Prussia in 1740. He probably heard his parents talk about the changes Frederick the Great made. Some of changes included the freedom to worship and the freedom of the press.5 With the reign of Frederick the Great, came numerous conflicts with Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria including the First Silesian War and the War of Austrian Succession, which ended in 1748.6 At this time, Jobst started his own family.

On 23 Feb 1748, Jobst Henrich Glied wed ANNA ILSABEIN SCHÜRMANN. They were married at the Evangelisch Church in the nearby Kirchspiel (parish) of Schildesche, Westfalen, Germany.7 Anna (1729-1799), was the illegitimate daughter of Johann Caspar Schürmann and Anna Ilsabein Upmeier of Schildesche. She was baptized in Jul of 1729 at the Evangelisch Church in Schildesche. Her sponsor was Schinckmann's Frau from Kirchspiel (parish) Herford, Westfalen, Germany.8

Even though he was the eldest son, Jobst left Oberjöllenbeck and took up residency at Bauerschaft Vilsendorf in the parish of Schildesche, with his bride. Jobst was a König, which meant he belonged to the King until he was freed ca. 1756.9 He was also a Heürling.10 Jobst Henrich Glied was 54 years old when he died from Kolik (colic) on 12 Jul 1776 at Bauerschaft Vilsendorf, Hof #4.11 Anna, age 70, died from Brustkränke (pneumonia), on 9 Nov 1799 at Bauerschaft Schildesche.12 Jobst and Anna Glied nee Schürmann had thirteen children, but only three survived to adulthood.
